She wants a summer job and a ride to a wedding.

He wants an assistant and a distraction from the mess life his had become.
They didn’t know they needed each other.
Avery Emili needs two grand. Two grand and a plane ticket–her sister is counting on her to get to Jamaica for her wedding. But the semester is over, and tutoring college freshman and high school students has dried up until the fall.
Atticus Grimes needs help–the messy split with his wife left the twenty-eight year old professor scrambling to keep things together as the semester winds down. Now he’s got a research grant he has to actually do research for and all he wants to do is drown himself in a tall bottle of bourbon.
When Avery sees his ad for an assistant, all she’s thinking is a summer job. But as they spend time together, in the office and out, both of them begin to realize something is there. Something that can’t happen–he’s a professor and she’s a student. And both of them have histories, pasts that won’t let go. Can two broken people pulled apart by expectations find a way to be whole?

Author Interview
  1. Which writers inspire you?
Oh, man. I grew up on CS Lewis, Jaqcualine Carey and David Eddings, so definitely them. Anne Bishop and Juliet Marillier, as well. More relevant to my current genre would be Gayle Foreman. She blows me away every time I read her work.
  1. When did you decide to become an author?
About five years ago, when I decided I didn’t want to work away from my kids. I had stories to tell, and I needed to tell them.
  1. How many more books do you plan to be in this series?
Um, it’s still early to say—but I have at least one more, and  probably two or three. 🙂
  1. What project are you working on now?
The second University of Branton novel (coming out October 2013)
  1. Who designs your book covers?
Melissa Stevens of The Illustrated Author—she’s AMAZING.
  1. What would you say are the main advantages/disadvantages about being self-published/traditional publishing?
I love the autonomy of self-publishing—I get to decide everything, which for a control freak, is awesome. On the flip side—it’s really daunting. It’s just me and my little book and the team I assemble. I don’t have the weight of a traditional house behind me working with me on marketing and everything else.  Sometimes it’s overwhelming, but I love it.
  1. Do you have any advice for other authors taking the same route as you?
Be ready to work harder than you ever have in your life. Know your options—don’t self-pub because ‘everyone’s doing it’ or because you got three rejections. Do it because it’s the best option for you and your book (and know why that’s true). Give yourself time to do it properly—the editing, the marketing, the cover. All of it.
  1. What is your favorite motivational phrase?
Lol, it’s from the movie, A League of Their Own.  “Of course it’s hard. If were easy, everyone would do it. If it were easy, everyone would do it.”
